Older Drivers and Car Collisions
December 2024
The Centers for Disease Control reports that older drivers aged 70 and over have a higher death rate per 1000 car crashes than younger drivers. Further, about 20 older adults are killed on the roadways of the United States each day. In addition, about 540 older adults are injured on the roadways each day.
Older drivers often cause car collisions due failing to yield the right of way, missing traffic lights, driving the wrong way and being impaired by medications or vision problems. In addtion, health conditions such as arthritis, glaucoma, early dementia and diabetes can impair driving abilities. Further, older drivers have weaker muscles, limited range of motion, slower reaction time and reduced flexibility.
Taking safe steps can help older adults stay safe on the roads. These steps include wearing a seat belt, driving during good weather conditions and avoiding distractions.
