Dangers of Using Driver Assistance Systems

July 2024

Newer vehicles are designed with features to enhance vehicle safety.  One of the features is Driver Assistance Systems.  This new feature may introduce new risks and dangers into driving that did not exist prior to the feature.

One new risk is the false sense of security that the system provides.  A driver is required to use a proper lookout and the system can lead a driver to pay less attention to the road.  The false sense of security can be dangerous and the system is not meant to replace the driver's active particpation in driving the vehicle.  The system is not meant to be autonomous driving.  Also, the systems have had difficulties staying in lanes, getting too close to other vehicles and guardrails.

The system is not foolproof in detecting hazards.  The system's have shown limititations detecting and responding to certain type of hazards.  Further, the systems have failed to adequately monitor driver engagement or respond appopriately when a driver has been inattentive.

If you have been injured in a car collision, take the time to seek experienced trial counsel.  At Herrick & Hart, we have been on the side of the injured since 1951.
