Parental Role in Teen Driving

August 2024

Parents play a crucial role in promoting safe driving habits for teen drivers.  Here are some ideas and guidelines for parents:

  1. Limit nightime driving for teens - Parents can consider a curfew for new drivers as they begin to drive on the roads.
  2.  Passenger restrictions - Parents can consider limiting the number of passengers a new driver may have in the car.
  3.   Cell phones - Recommend to the teen drive to not text and drive.
  4.   Weather restrictions - Parents can limit driving to fair weather conditions.  Weather conditions involving snow and ice are challenging for new drivers.
  5.   Road type restrictions - Parents can limit driving to lower speed roads that are close to home and familiar to the teen driver.  After the driver has obtained experience, more challenging roads can be added.
  6.   Parental supervision - Parents can control the keys to car and require the teen ask for permission before taking car.

By setting clear rules and expectations, parents can assist their teen driver to be safe on the roads.
