Proposed Legislation Regarding Operating a Vehicle with Insurance
February 2017
Proposed legislation in the Wisconsin State Assembly proposes to modify the existing law regarding the requirement to operate a motor vehicle with sufficient liability insurance. The current law in the State of Wisconsin requires that a person operating a motor vehicle on a highway has in place an insurance policy. A person is also required to have in hand if stopped proof that he or she is in compliance with the requirement. The proposed law repeals the requirement to have in hand proof of insurance. The traffic officer would still write the citation but the driver would be able to provide proof of insurance at the time of driving at a later date.
